Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre

    Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre; looking for your help.

    Looking for your help...

    The Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre has documentation charting over 800 years of history from the county, it's places, people and events. They also hold personal documents, such as photos, diaries and letters, with the majority being accessible by the public, with opportunities for visitors to talk to archivists and community historical advisors during their visit.

    The Centre is now looking for your help in putting together a COVID-19 collection recording peoples experiences of living through lockdown in Wiltshire in 2020.

    In the same way that historians in the past have used archived material to find out what it was like to live through the 1918/19 Flu pandemic, they are now hoping to be able to give future historians studying the current COVID-19 pandemic some idea of what life under lock down in the County was really like. As the Centre states;

    We want to make a collection which reflects the experiences of people from Wiltshire and Swindon as they live through the Covid-19 pandemic.

    This crisis will be closely studied by future generations who will turn to the archives to discover how we made sense of this life changing experience. And this is where we need the public’s help. We want you to make a record of your experiences during lockdown – you might already have begun to do this, or this appeal might prompt you to begin a diary, write a poem, make a scrapbook, or a piece of artwork.

    We want you to think about creating something that future generations can use that shows how our personal and working lives have been transformed by this global crisis. This is an opportunity to make a creative response to challenging times.

    Whatever you circumstance or experiences it is your stories that we want.

    For more information you can visit the Living in Lockdown section of their site.

    The Centre is currently working on a crib sheet for contributors, so please keep an eye on their website, which you can visit here for more information, where you can also find further details on what the Centre does and any upcoming events.
